Leonida Map — Everything We Know About GTA 6's Open World

The state of Leonida is the largest Rockstar has ever built. Here's the confirmed geography, the strongly implied regions, and what we don't know yet — based on both trailers, Rockstar's site, and outlet previews.

Leonida is the fictional U.S. state Rockstar built for Grand Theft Auto VI, and it is the largest game world Rockstar has ever constructed. Here's everything we know about what it contains — and what we don't know yet.

What's Confirmed

The state is inspired by Florida. Rockstar has been explicit about this. Leonida is a fictionalized version of the U.S. South Florida peninsula — the geography, the climate, the architecture, and the cultural texture all map back to Miami-Dade County and the Keys. The state name itself is a reference to the historical battle for Florida independence.

Vice City returns as the main urban center. The city that launched GTA III's cultural moment returns as Leonida's largest metropolitan area — and it's been rebuilt from scratch. The Trailer 2 footage shows a Vice City that feels substantially larger and more detailed than the 2002 original, with a proper downtown skyline, waterfront districts, and neighborhoods that appear to span multiple square miles of in-game territory.

The Everglades are in. Outlet previews and Trailer 2 footage show swamp and marsh terrain in the southern portion of the map. The Everglades area is described as rural, with scattered farmsteads, waterways, and what appear to be abandoned industrial facilities.

The Florida Keys are in. Multiple outlets confirm an island-chain region south of the Everglades, with Trailer 2 showing a bridge-and-island sequence that maps to the Upper Keys. The Keys are likely the southernmost point of the map.

What's Strongly Implied

The map is noticeably larger than GTA V's Los Santos. GameSpot's previewer described Leonida as "noticeably larger than San Andreas" (GTA V's map). The original GTA V map was approximately 75 square miles. Early hands-on previews consistently describe Leonida as "bigger than anything we've seen from Rockstar" — which suggests the total area including rural regions could be in the 90–120 square mile range.

There are distinct biomes. Trailer 2 shows: dense urban core, coastal waterfront, subtropical swamp, rural farmland, and at least one island region. Rockstar's tradition is to make each biome feel meaningfully different in aesthetics, NPCs, and activities.

At least one major island or coastal area separate from Vice City proper. The bridge shots in Trailer 2 suggest a Keys region that's not contiguous with the mainland. In GTA V terms, this would be like Caine Stakes or the Elysian Island — but scaled up substantially.

What's Still Unknown

Exact square mileage. Rockstar has not published a number. The leaks suggesting "100 square miles" are unverified. We'll measure once we can.

Water travel mechanics. GTA VI will almost certainly have boats and watercraft (a tradition since GTA: Vice City). Whether there are underwater sections, swimming, or diving mechanics remains unconfirmed.

Subway and transit. GTA V dropped public transit. Rockstar has not confirmed whether Leonida has a subway, monorail, or bus system.

North Leonida. Trailer 1 and 2 both focus on the southern half of the map (Vice City and surrounding coastal/rural areas). The northern border of Leonida is not shown in either trailer.

Interior density. The number of enterable buildings, stores, and interiors is the biggest unanswered question. Rockstar has been expanding interior design with each title — GTA IV had far fewer enterable spaces than GTA V. At this stage, no outlet has confirmed what percentage of Leonida is explorable interior vs. outdoor space.

Regions We Expect to Find in Leonida

Based on the Florida inspiration and what Rockstar has shown:

| Region | Type | Notes | |---|---|---| | Vice City | Urban metropolis | Main city, multiple districts | | South Beach / Ocean Drive | Upscale waterfront | Trailer 2 shows this area prominently | | Little Haiti / Little Havana | Cultural neighborhoods | Hints in Trailer 1 background | | The Everglades | Swampland / rural | Southern Leonida, rural missions | | The Upper Keys | Island chain | Southern tip, bridge-and-island sequence | | Port Gellhorn | Industrial / military | Implied in Trailer 2 background chatter | | Rural Leonida | Farmland / small towns | Scattered farmsteads, small settlements | | Cayo Perico-equivalent | Isolated island | Heist destination, post-launch likely |

What to Watch For

The launch trailer (expected May 22) is the clearest view of the full map we will get before launch. Watch for:

  • Wide aerial shots that reveal the map's total footprint
  • Any minimap footage showing the full state
  • The map screen (press TAB or M during gameplay) shown in any preview footage

Our database will have a full interactive map of Leonida's confirmed locations, regions, and points of interest within 12 hours of launch. Bookmark the countdown to stay close.
